Warning: Average Not Allowed

Get ready, it's coming! The first part of an extended series is almost here. I'm partnering with John Williams, of Axon Sport Performance to bring you a different type of Ebook, released in a way most aren't.

The 1% Mindset, when tapped into, provides you with an unlimited source of confidence. Make the decision that you're finished settling for an average way of competing, working, or living.  Be a model for your kids, show your peers that sacrifice is the only way, or prove to your parents "realistic" doesn't exist.

Stay tuned ... it's on the way!

Commit To Pain

"You want to have what I have but don't want to do what I do."
-Unknown

Many talk about reaching higher plateaus and becoming more successful, but few will do what it takes to get there. The next level isn't sexy ... it's sweaty! You need to get dirty, bleed, and reach total exhaustion. The 1%, not only understand this, they love it!

Commit to pain, experience pleasure.

No Fear Allowed

Talking from experience, there's nothing worse than allowing fear to dictate your decisions. I had to consciously decide that I would no longer allow that to happen, and focus every second of every day on that goal.

If you want this type of change, there's no secret - you must get engaged, and dedicate every waking moment to making it happen.

Fearlessness is the answer!

Raise The Bar

"The greater danger for most of us lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low, and achieving our mark."
-Michelangelo

It's simple ... the most successful people in history aren't afraid of high expectations - they thrive on them. If you want to achieve huge, you can't ask yourself to strive for little. The challenge for most is the illusion of failure if the goal isn't reached, but failure can only happen if we succumb to the fear of missing our mark.

Raise the bar higher than most can fathom, and have the courage to attack that bar with unrelenting dedication!

Service Over Selfish

Here's Part 3 of a 4 part series - how to separate from the masses, 1% style. When I switched my mindset to understanding THIS concept, my entire life changed.

Keep Attacking Your Dreams

After years of retirement, MJ is still used as an example of what it means to be the best. His physical talent is rarely talked about as being the separation factor. It was his ability to dominate an opponent mentally and emotionally that has set him apart, not only from basketball players, but from the majority of all other athletes in history.

Master Your Reflection

Before anything can happen, you must get honest with yourself. No more hiding behind what you want others to think; no more pretending it's all o.k. Stop thinking it'll fix itself somehow, sometime when you're not looking. It won't.

What's your mirror truly need? What changes must occur today in order to allow your potential to scream? Who do you need to call, text, or email? What excuses have to be erased?

Until you're honest, dreams will wait, soon disappearing forever. Don't be that person who wishes he would've only ....

Have Unflappable Faith

Separation, 1% Style ...

Last week, in Part 1, I talked about creating the mindset of a professional poker player - having an unmatched level of fearlessness and being able to shove all of your chips in the middle of the pot, regardless of the cards you're holding.

This week, Part 2 is about having unflappable faith.

They Stop, You Attack

The key to reaching any goal you have isn't speed ... it's perseverance.

While most stop when it gets too frustrating, you keep pushing. The mind will play tricks on you - telling you it's too difficult and not worth the struggle. Don't listen. Tap into your driving force, stare straight ahead, and attack.

Keep stepping, knowing one of those steps will land you directly on top of your goal!

It's coming. I promise you. It's coming.

Predator Or Prey

Every morning, when the clock hits 3:45 and my eyes open, I have two options: Stay in my warm bed or get up and be the model for my daughter. If I remain tucked under my covers, I instantly lose the opportunity to teach Logan that anything in life is attainable if you're willing to sacrifice, endure, and be relentless. At 3 1/2, she already asks me why I'm on the computer when she wakes up every morning. My answer will help mold how she thinks and who she becomes.

When I wake up earlier than the sun, I become the predator, losing the victim's mentality, and gain a competitive edge over who I used to be. If I ask my students to do "whatever it takes," I better be willing to do the same, if not more!

There are only two options: Predator or prey. If you're not outworking your competition, you'll get eaten alive today. Life is an immense competition, on and off the playing field. You're competing in the classroom, on your college applications, and after you earn a degree and attempt to make your mark on the world. If you're unwilling to grind for what you want 24/7, 365, you have no chance of succeeding against those who are.

Move over or get run over!

The #1 rule I live by: To achieve what 99% can't ... I must do what 99% won't.

Driven By Impossible

The next time you doubt anything, no matter how big or "impossible" it seems, remember Jack Taylor. This Grinnell College guard scored 138 points in a basketball game last week, shattering the NCAA record. Lakers star Kobe Bryant said, "I don't care what level he's on, that feat is insane."

Scoring 138 points with no one defending you would be an unbeilable achievement!

Jack's the definition of believing before evidence. He obviously knew he could score ... but 138 points in one game? Impossible no more!

Don't allow anyone to dictate your belief system. If you want something, decide it'll happen, decide you'll endure any amount of pain necessary, and decide you'll battle for as long as it takes. It's only impossible until someone achieves it. Are you going to be the person who waits for records to be broken or will you make up your mind that you'll be the one who breaks them?

The 1% is driven by impossible!

ThanksGIVING

The greatest gift I was ever given was my family. The day my tennis partner decided to quit was the day I met my wife. I was supposed to be in Germany that Friday night, but instead was forced to stay home because he changed his mind - he didn't want to compete anymore. Thank God he did!

"I'd like you to meet my roommate, Liane," my friend said.

The rest is history!

The day my daughter was born, was the day I was born ... again. No one prepared me for the emotions I would experience and the deep sense of responsibility I would feel. My instincts would tell me to acquire, achieve, attain. And that's what I would set out to do. I wanted to make (X) amount of money before (X) year. I visualized it every day, but never felt whole with the visual - never felt fully committed to that future plan. Achieving money never resonated with me, making me feel like a failure - I wanted my family to taste that type of financial freedom.

Then I met the man who changed it all for me. He was homeless as a boy, kicked out of his house at 16 years old, but worked his tail off to become a huge success 20 years later. The conversation I had with him altered my life forever. He reminded me that money should never be the motivational factor, but instead, a deeper emotional connection that would drive me to a nonstop fury.

"If you want to provide financial freedom for your family, then give away as much of your time as possible," he said.

This was counterintuitive to me, but I trusted his years of experience - he wasn't just talking it, he was living it every day. The second I erased money from my visual, and solely focused on helping those who wanted it ... BOOM!

It's Thanksgiving. Don't just say the words, live the meaning. What have you done this year to help those around you? Life isn't about attaining, it's about learning and sharing. Be grateful and give.

There Are No Rainy Days

Never settle for less than ridiculous levels of success. Do what they won't ... achieve what they can't!

Tuesday, November 20, 2012

Want New? Do New.

Most don't mind sacrifice if it's free, painless, or comfortable. That's NOT sacrifice!

In order to achieve something great, you must give up something great ... usually your time and comfort levels. 1% Success comes to those who are willing to feel pain and struggle, love and embrace it. It may last an hour, month, or 10 years, but the pain will disappear, leaving behind your dreams!

Decide you'll do whatever it takes for as long as it takes. This is true sacrifice.

It's very simple: If you really want something to happen in your life, you'll do whatever it takes, no matter how long it takes. If you just "kinda want it," you'll find an excuse.

Get it done!

Raise Your Expectations

I wanted to share four outcome goals an athlete of mine wrote down, regarding an upcoming soccer tournament she has:

1. No goals scored on us. If it happens, I'll take full responsibility.

2. I'll have huge impact on the field. My opponents will envy or hate me - no other option.

3. Make someone cry.

4. Sign a Division 1 scholarship on the spot from one of the many college coaches watching.

To most, these goals sound aggressive, cocky, maybe even arrogant. Why does she want an opponent to cry or hate her? Why will she feel responsible in a team sport? This athlete is willing to put the entire team on her back, and do whatever it takes to separate from the pack. She's completely uninterested in being liked on the field ... only respected and feared. She's a beast during competition, and is why at 16 years old, already has D1 offers on the table.

To achieve what they won't, you must do what they can't. Raise the bar for yourself!

Confidence Isn't Good Enough

Chip Kelly, Oregon's football coach is revolutionizing the way the college game is played and especially thought about.

He doesn't settle for confidence ... he expects dominance!

Coach Kelly's expectations are set for the total destruction of their opponents' will. The old school way of thinking is "slow and steady" will win the game - Chip's mindset is about ripping your heart out NOW! He wants to score on you every single play, and fast.

I highly suggest you adopt this mentality. Make sure your goals are being attacked with a fever pitch. Opportunity won't hang around forever, so while you have a chance, strike now.

Lose your focus on confidence ... switch it to dominance!

I AM Having Fun

Someone recently suggested to me that I should have more fun. "Life's too short," he reminded me. Life IS short, which is why I stopped having the fun I used to regularly take part in. My life used to be full of nonstop fun, screwing around and achieving nothing. I'm through with that type of "fun!"

Waking up at 4:00 am is fun, knowing I'm teaching my daughter she can have anything her imagination can picture - all it takes is a willingness to work harder than the majority surrounding her.

The past kind of fun I took part in would've taught her how to be lazy and afraid. It would've shown her that mediocrity is an o.k. way to live and taking risks isn't a normal part of life. The type of fun I used to have would've kept me out of her life the majority of nights and weekends, as I high-fived buddies and lived for the football team of my choice.

The old fun was exciting ... and selfish. My new fun is committed ... and dedicated to my family's future and legacy!

Take Advantage Of Opportunity

Your time doesn't tick, tick, round-n-round, as most believe ... it slides away.

You don't have the time you think to accomplish your goals. If you don't capitalize on it right away, it will disappear. Act with passion. Act now! Opportunity is sliding down into the bottom of your hour glass, one grain at a time. Eventually, it won't be there anymore.

The hungry take advantage, the weak make excuses.

Who are you?

You're Being Watched

Mother Teresa gave until it hurt ... then she gave even more!

When you're striving, working, attaining, remember that you're being watched - maybe by younger ones, looking for a role model. Someone around you is searching for help.

Be selfless in your actions, kind in your words, and know that you're an inspiration to someone - maybe even a total stranger.

Your goals may be personal, but your achievement of those goals must be shared!

Find Your Reason

In order to be a phenomenal singer, you must emotionally own each song from the inside-out, making it come to life. No matter how beautiful your voice sounds, if the audience can't feel you, it'll fall on deaf ears. This emotional connection is the key to making your dreams become a reality, regardless if you're a singer, athlete, entrepreneur, mother, or father. Find your "why," create your greatness!

This picture epitomizes my "why." I know I've posted about Logan in the past, but when you're internally locked-in to why you do what you do, it's who you become, 24/7. She's the reason my passion for the 1% Mindset bleeds out of me every second of the day. How she chooses to view each difficult circumstance is my reason.

When you tap into your motivation for breathing, and emotionally connect to it, you'll witness every ounce of potential spill out of you.

You Can't Rise Up Until You Fall Down

1% Success is impossible until you go through the pain and frustration of failure.

Thursday, October 18, 2012

Difficult Is The New Easy

If you want easy, take up checkers. If you want life long success, take up difficult.

If you're not failing on a regular basis, you're not pushing yourself hard enough. Out of that failure comes strength of character, confidence, and a path to greatness.

If you avoid the drop, you'll miss the rise.

Wednesday, October 17, 2012

You Win Because You've Lost

Most don't understand the power of failure. The majority spend their day avoiding it at all cost because they've been programmed to believe failure is the opposite of success. In reality, failure is the seed success is born from.

When I speak to those striving to reach their "next level," I make sure they understand I'm where I am strictly because of the failures in my life. I don't speak from a place of success, but rather from a place of rock bottom. Everyone has failed and can relate to the emotions associated, but not many understand the power each failure holds for their future.

Instead of constantly looking for ways to succeed, create a mindset of designing a path of risk and potential failure. If you do fall, stay there longer than you normally would - embrace this time, learn it's power, and rise higher because of it. Fall hard, climb high.

Eric Thomas: Universally recognized as the voice of, "When you want to succeed as bad as you want to breathe, THEN you'll be successful."

Someone Tweeted Eric, saying Ray would tear him up as a motivational speaker. Eric replied, "Call Ray right now - let's do it anywhere. As matter of fact, let's do it in Ray's locker room, speaking to his Ravens team ..."

Who's better? You decide. Not even close, in my opinion. Ray may want to duck ... ET's swinging!

Boom, It Hit Me ...

I wanted to share a message that was recently sent to me, anonymously. This person proves that pain and struggle is real, but doesn't have to run our lives forever. Thank you for allowing me to take a glimpse into your life - I'm humbled beyond words.

-------

"I woke up and saw nothing of myself. It was as if I didn't exist and had nothing to offer this world. Hopelessness was my best friend, always pointing me in her direction, and holding my hand on the path to nowhere. I cried. I never laughed. I smiled, only to wonder at what it would be like to do it for real and feel it's power.

When I arrived at school, I wore a 7 hour mask, hiding the fear and doubt from all that whispered, "are you o.k.?" Of course I was fine. Not really. I wasn't fine at all. I was wondering on a path to nowhere. As the clock ticked, purpose for my day became obviously nonexistent, making the frustration of my path even stronger. No one knew my pain. No one understood my agony. I was alone.

Then it all changed ...

I woke up one Tuesday morning, and asked myself why I was living this way. When I couldn't come up with a good answer, I thought maybe I didn't HAVE to continue. I then took 30 minutes to make believe I wasn't sad and alone, and imagined my life with purpose, dedicating it to helping people like me. I sat and visualized myself as a changed person, and as you always say, "BOOM," it hit me: I didn't have to remain walking on this path. I had choices and control over my destination. There were others stuck in the darkness I knew too well, and I would help them. I would touch their future and teach them that they can overcome anything.

I'm in the beginning stages of this process, but it's happening. I no longer feel darkness and loneliness and I've thrown the mask I wore to school in the garbage. Thank you for helping me see that, no matter how impossible things seem, we always have a way through. My way out of the sadness may not be how everyone finds their way out, but it worked for me, and I'll help them find what works for them.

Here's to a life of purpose and passion."

Play Big Or Not At All

Risk. Love. Endure. Succeed. Repeat.

If you want your 1% Success Story written, you must risk failing, over and over again until your efforts and game plan stick.

The love of the fight, confrontation, and battle to make it happen must excite you. Instead of shying away from the grind, learn to invite it into your day.

The 99% want the immediate win, and are willing to succeed 364 days / year, knowing on day 365, they're likely to lose it all. The 1% are capable of enduring agony for 364 consecutive days, knowing on day 365, they'll find overwhelming success, making the past worth the pain.

After all the risk, love for the fight, and endurance of struggle ... your goals will be reached. Ironically, because you're the 1% and hungry to continue improving, you'll set new heights and repeat the process.

It's not about attaining ... it's about crawling, bleeding, sweating. You gotta love it!

Now What

We're all going to lose ... and often. Defeat isn't the issue, being able to ask yourself, "Now what" is what will make or break us. Getting used to, and accepting the loss is the killer of all competitors. Once we give-in to the defeat, part of our soul dies.

Perseverance, resiliency, and a commitment to never quit after a loss is what separates the 1% from the 99% - the elite from the average. Give 100% effort on and off the athletic field, and never EVER accept defeat. Never allow it to dictate who you are and what you believe about yourself.

Did you fight to your maximum ability? Did you sweat and bleed every last bit of energy out of your system? Will you come back next time even hungrier? If your answer is yes to those questions, you can't lose!

Embrace The Pain

Go harder than you think is possible. 1% Success is only attained by working yourself past exhaustion. This is why I've labeled it 1% - the majority can't fathom, or won't imagine making this type of sacrifice.

If you want to achieve things you've never had, you must do things you've never done!

Your body can go beyond self-limiting beliefs ... it's the mind that tries to convince you to stop when it becomes "too painful." Risk the struggle, embrace the pain.

What are you waiting for? Make impossible possible. Break records.

Let's Be Honest

I wanted to share an email I was recently sent - read it carefully. Grab it's true meaning ...

Last night I was taking a break from my late night blogging and trying to rest my mind by indulging in some television time with my husband. We were watching a show called “The Voice (the blind auditions)” which I found surprisingly engaging with many gifted contestants and amusing banter amongst the judges. The premise of the show is that the contestants sing and the judges can’t see what they look like. They must judge them only on what they hear and turn their chairs around if they want them for their team. If multiple judges turn around the contestant must choose which judges team they wish to join.  There was a moment in the show when three of the four judges turned around, although one had waited until the very last moment—only seconds before the performance ended.  When the contestant questioned each judge as to why they wanted him on their team, each provided standard complimentary responses. Finally when the judge who waited was asked what his hesitation was, he gave critical and honest feedback about the performance, making the point that there was room for improvement.  The contestant picked the honest judge saying later that he appreciated his constructive criticism.

I have been thinking about this moment and the choices we make in life to open ourselves up to the opinions and guidance of others. We always have the choice to ask for feedback, but so often we shut our eyes and ears with the belief that we know better, instead of opening our minds and hearts to the possibilities.  Instead we want to be invisible rather than allow others to help us nurture the growth that is inevitable, that is destined.

Someone said to me the other day that “you can either embrace your inner priestess or she will become your inner bag lady”.  At the time I thought I understood what he was trying to tell me but, upon further reflection I think that I have just begun to reveal the true meaning. Perhaps my "priestess self" isn’t exactly how I would like the outside world to see me. I might not be ready to reveal her honestly and this person was boldly calling me out for having some work to do to accept and reveal my true self.  At the time I wasn't ready to hear it, as I open myself up to accepting his true message to me, I can suddenly see myself more clearly and hopefully move forward to a better place. If I continued to deny my inner priestess her due care and attention, she just might turn on me and start sifting through my inner trash.  When we choose to move forward and embrace change (i.e. our inner priestess) we are propelled forward, but when we turn our back on the truth and deny change and growth,  we become stagnant in a landfill of our own making.

When we boldly seek honesty, crave it, accept it, we are rewarded by transformation. I think that as I have found in myself and as I observe in others around me, the unconscious path is more often chosen--that of kind words, and lovely reflections--it lures us down an endless, vapid path with no reward. When we consciously invite true reflections and kind but honest guidance it leads us to amazing places that we never could have dreamed of.

Never Stop

There's a common denominator between all highly successful people - quitting is never an option, period!

Incredible things will happen in your life if you make a commitment to never EVER give up on your passions, no matter how long it takes or how much struggle is involved! I'm living proof that it can be done if you're willing to endure massive amounts of pain. I quit a lucrative career in order to pursue my passion. I went broke financially, emotionally, and as a husband ... but I knew "quit" couldn't be a part of my vocabulary and "stop" couldn't be a part of my vision.

It took time, but it all turned around. The minute I hit bottom, my passion was tested and motivation created. I made a conscious decision that my family was more important than the temporary pain I was feeling - I couldn't quit. I wouldn't quit.

When it's all said and done, you're being defined by your reaction to the difficulties in life, not by the success you attain. Create a 1% Mindset that refuses to stop, ignores failure, and is fueled by struggle. When you do this, you become unstoppable!

You're My Biggest Weapon

You used to scare me. Now you motivate me.
99% of people warned me about you, but they all lied.
You're not evil. You're the reason I've achieved so much after thinking I was done.
I used to think you took away, but now I know you give.
You give greatness. You give the 1% Mindset.
You ARE the 1% Mindset.
You've shaped me, molded me, helped me become a better teacher and motivator.
You're not scary. You're powerful beyond words.
Because of you, I wake up before the sun.
Because of you, I've committed my very being to teaching my daughter fearlessness.
I thank you.

Until we meet again ... and we WILL meet again, pain.

Why You?

Here’s the future 1% Success Story of Zack Okong’o. We’ll be working together soon, helping him turn this dream into a reality.

I'm 18 years old, and a basketball player from Kenya. I'm still in high school entering my last year this September, and want to get to college in the US. I did trial SATs and did very well. I have universities interested, which has helped muster some confidence that next year I might get into a program.

I do have some problems, though - I'm filled with profound self-doubt as a person and in my skills. Despite all the hard work I relentlessly put in, I'm constantly frustrated. The lack of belief in myself has resulted in the premeditation of failure. I don't always quite put all the effort I can when playing major games because I'm afraid of failing. Everyday, however, I dream of playing pro ball. I just wanna play this game at a high level ... no joke ... I'm willing to die for it!

I'm constantly searching for motivation everywhere I can lay my hands on - from pple like you, Eric Thomas, Giavanni Ruffin, and others. I'm constantly reading books to keep me going, and I'm on YouTube looking at drills I can use to get better. I'm also studying the greats who have made it in the NBA. I WANT THIS SO BAD, COACH! Why cant I be the among the greats? I just need help learning to believe in myself, and all the hard work I've put in. It's what has gotten me to where I am now.

This year, I made the National team and will be going down to South Africa for an NBA camp. I got selected after being so disappointed last year when I wasn't even among the last of the players to be considered. I dreamed about it and prayed over it after last year's disappointment ... and got in. God is Great!!

I need some mental training, learning to trust myself, and my skills. I know I have what it takes - I just need some help getting there. I'm on my way out of this self-doubt jail and to free myself of it. I know I will!

Thanks coach ... very much.

Greatness Is Upon You

Eric's most powerful message, yet! Look in his eyes while he's speaking. THIS is what it means to have your motivation locked-in.

Choose Wisely ...

You only have two choices: Victim or the victor! How you perceive each situation in your life will determine your next move, ultimately creating your future.

"This is too tough - I can't do it."

OR

"I will make it, no matter what it takes ... period!"

The beauty of life is our ability to choose which mindset we wake up with each morning. It's this mindset that will create the path we walk and journey we live. Will you complain about the circumstances you're faced with or decide to change them? Will you be a model of defeat or strength for your children?

Victim or victor? Your choice!
